Six top tips to create a standout CV and land your dream job

By Shaune-Patrick Clarkson, Recruitment Consultant

You’ve just spotted your dream job online. The role sounds perfect. The company is exactly what you’ve been looking for. You can already picture yourself working there.

But there’s one big hurdle… your CV.

You know it needs to make a positive first impression, but how can you make sure it stands out from the rest?

Follow our top tips for creating a standout CV and yours will soon be unforgettable.

1. Keep it neat and tidy – the layout matters

When you’re a hiring manager with a stack of CVs to sift through, the ones that are clear and easy to read always take top priority.

Aim for a layout that’s both professional and easy on the eye. Use a clean font (Arial or Calibri are good) and ensure there’s plenty of white space to avoid overwhelming the eye.

Latest research shows that recruiters spend an average of just six seconds scanning a CV – so aim for a maximum of two pages and make every second count.

2. Start with a nice short, punchy profile

Instead of a vague statement like “I’m a motivated professional,” start with a short profile that highlights your skills, experiences and what makes you unique.

Something like “I am a results-driven marketing specialist with over five years of experience in digital campaigns,” is far more effective and engaging.

3. Promote your transferable skills

Transferable skills are your best friends. When you’ve gained abilities from one job that can apply to many others, it’s worth shouting about them – such as communication, project management and problem-solving.

According to a LinkedIn survey, 92% of talent professionals say these soft skills are equally important as technical skills. So, even if you’re moving into a new field, showcasing these skills can make you a strong candidate.

4. Quantify your credentials

Numbers speak louder than words. And being specific makes your accomplishments more concrete and impressive.

When listing your achievements, try to quantify them. For instance, instead of saying “I successfully managed a team,” say “I lead a team of 10, resulting in a 25% increase in project efficiency.”

The more precise you can be, the better.

5. Show your qualifications (and training) are a good fit

When you want to stand out to a potential employer, highlighting your qualifications (and any courses or training you have been on) will play a key role. Not only do they demonstrate your expertise, it shows your commitment to continuous learning and ability to meet changing demands.

Add in any training which highlights hands-on experience as this will give employers confidence in your ability to learn and contribute effectively from day one.

6. Tailor your CV for each job application

When it comes to CVs, one size doesn’t always fit all. Tweaking and tailoring your CV for each job application can make a massive difference. Carefully read the job description and use keywords from the job listing to adjust your CV, highlighting the experiences and skills that match what the employer is looking for.

Remember, your CV is your personal marketing tool – and it will pay to make it shine.
